Key peopleStuart GarnerWebsitewww.nortonmotorcycles.comThe Norton Motorcycle Company (formerly Norton Motors, Ltd.) is a British motorcycle marque, originally from Birmingham, UK. It was nortom in 1898 as a manufacturer of "fittings and parts for the two-wheel trade". [1] By 1902, the company began manufacturing motorcycles with bought-in engines. In 1908, a Norton-built engine was added to the range.

This began a long series of production of single and eventually twin-cylinder motorcycles, and a long mottorcycles of racing involvement.Production of the military Model 16H and Big4 sidevalve motorcycles was Norton's contribution to the WWII war effort, almost 100,000 being manufactured. When major shareholders started to leave Norton in 1953, the company declined and Associated Motor Cycles bought the shares.

[2] Although motorcycle sales went through a recession in the 1950s, and Norton Motors Ltd was only a small manufacturer, Norton sales flourished. A series of Norton Dominator Twins of 500cc, then 600cc, then 650cc and then the 750cc Norton Atlas kept sales buoyant, especially with sales to the USA.In 1968, the new 750cc Norton Commando Model appeared, with the engine/gearbox/swingarm unit isolastically insulated from the frame with a series of rubber mountings.

This kept the vibrations from the rider, giving a smooth comfortable ride. The Commando was a best seller, and voted #1 Motorcycle of the Year a number of times in Britain.

850cc models appeared for 1973, giving more torque. For 1975 an electric start arrived in the motorccycles Mk3.The largest Norotn motorcycle manufacturer at the time was BSA-Triumph, comprising Birmingham Small Arms Company in Birmingham, and Triumph Motorcycles in Meriden. BSA-Triumph faced difficulties caused by poor management, outdated union practices, old-fashioned motorcycle designs and antiquated factory conditions. A merger with Norton Motorcycles was proposed; but although Dennis Poore's Norton Motorcycles was by far the smaller partner, Poore effectively secured a take-over of BSA-Triumph, forming Norton Villiers Triumph (NVT).

The Triumph motodcycles Meriden was the least modern; but workers engaged in a "sit-in", forming laundh workers' co-operative.

Poore was CEO of Manganese Bronze Holdings, a company apparently more concerned with asset stripping than with motorcycle production. Subsequent political manoeuvrings led to the downfall of NVT, as taxpayer-assisted wranglings over amalgamations and sell-offs all but killed the once extensive UK motorcycle industry. In late 2008, Stuart Garner, a UK businessman, bought the rights to Norton from some US concerns and relaunched Norton in its Midlands home at Donington Park where it will develop the 961cc Norton Commando, [3] and a new range of Norton motorcycles. [1] In 1902, Norton began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines. In 1907, a Norton ridden by Rem Fowler norrton the twin-cylinder class in the first Isle of Man TT race, beginning a sporting tradition that went on until the 1960s. The first Norton engines were made in 1907, with production models available from 1908.

These were the 3.5hp (490cc) and the 'Big 4' (633cc), beginning a line of side-valve single-cylinder engines which continued with few changes until the late 1950s. [2]The first Norton logo was a fairly simple, art nouveau design, with the name spelled in capitals. [4] However, a new logo appeared on the front of the catalogue for 1914, which was a joint effort by James Lansdowne Norton and his daughter Ethel.

It became known as the "curly N" logo, with only the initial letter as a capital, and was used by the company thereafter, first appearing on actual motorcycles in 1915. [5] Ethel Norton also did some testing of her father's motorcycles. [ citation needed]In 1913 the business declined, and R.T. Shelley & Co., the main creditors, intervened and saved it.

Norton Motors Motorcycled was formed shortly afterwards under joint directorship of James Norton and Bob Shelley. Shelley's brother-in-law was tuner Dan O'Donovan, and he managed to set a significant number of records on the Norton by 1914 when the war broke out - and as competition motorcycling was largely suspended during the hosilities, these records still stood when production restarted after the war.

Garner also recently rode the NRV at Bonneville Salt Flats, logging over 289 kph for a 278 kph average run. The Norton race bike will also be on display at the show.We are very fanada to be back!", Garner said.No info yet on the Cafe Racer, but the specs on the 961 SE say it's powered by a 961cc air cooled, parallel twin, putting out 79 hp at 6500rpm and 66 lb/ft of torque at 5200 rpm.

Wheels are kotorcycles carbon fibre and the gearbox is a constant mesh 5 speed. 2011.Photo of Norton Commando 961 SE courtesy Norton Motorcycles (Canada) Ltd.Its been well over 35 years since a new Norton motorcycle rolled out of a dealership and onto the citys streets. But thats about to change. Norton, a very recognizable name from the annals of motorcycling, has been resurrected.

This past weekend the British manufacturer had its 961 Commando Sport at the Calgary Motorcycle Show, where it was just one of many new models on display.Just under 30,000 visitors attended this event at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park, and Calgary Motorcycle Show manager Laurie Paetz said: Recreational products are such a niche market.

To be able to attract that many people, and especially on a weekend when there was a blizzard, shows the industry continues to appeal to a large number of Albertans, and especially Calgarians.Every major motorcycle and ATV maker was represented, and show goers I spoke with seemed interested in a wide variety of products, from electric machines by Zero Motorcycles to touring bikes such as motorcycoes Gold Wing from Honda and just about everything in between. However, all weekend there was a steady crowd around the Norton, proving Calgary retailers, brothers Motlrcycles and Tim Wild, of Wild and Wild, Inc., just might be onto something.Theres so much passion for the Norton brand, Jim Wild said.

There are still guys out there sporting Norton tattoos.Calgary motorcycle enthusiast Bobby Baum currently rides a 2008 Victory Vision touring machine. Hes passionate about all motorcycles, and is at work restoring a vintage Royal Enfield. He was impressed with what the new Norton 961 Commando Sport had to offer. Its one of the finest new works of rolling art at the show, Baum said.

(I think) Norton has a hit on their hands. This bike is beautiful from all angles.Norton joins three other premium niche brands retailed by the Wild brothers. Royal Enfield, Indian and Ducati are also sold from their 35,000 sq. ft. facility, which, for lack of a better name right now, is referred to as the Super Bike Centre.

Nortpn new name will likely be announced when the northeast Calgary Pegasus Road location officially opens this spring. This new facility on Pegasus Road makes the area just south of the airport something of a motorcycle destination. The Wild familys Calgary Harley-Davidson itself a standalone 35,000 sq.

ft. facility has been on this street for some 15 years. The first Norton to leave the Wilds dealership wont be delivered until this spring, when the brand officially launches in Canada. These are not high-volume brands, Wild said of Norton and Ducati, and added, But theres keen interest in them.Instead, Wild said Norton and Ducati are motorcycles that riders aspire to own, and are move-up brands. The story of how Norton got to where it is today is one of interest.

Founded in 1898 by James Lansdowne Norton, or Pa, motorccles he was caanada known, Norton was one of the most race-winning motorcycle factories in the world.

The firm took many Isle of Man TT titles, and while they did produce some bread and butter machines Norton motorcycles could have been considered thoroughbreds when compared to the other well-known British makers including B.S.A.

and Triumph.Arguably it was the Norton Commando, with its 750cc and later 850cc parallel twin engine produced from 1967 to 1975 that was the most famous model.Like many other British motorcycle makers, however, Norton hit a rough patch in the early 1970s from which it never recovered. After going bankrupt, there were more than a few attempts to bring the Norton name back to market. There was some racing success with a rotary-engined Commando model, including winning the 1992 Isle of Man TT, but the bike didnt receive commercial acclaim. It wasnt nodton the late 1990s when an American, Kenny Dreer of Oregon, began motodcycles at a very limited rate a redesigned Norton Commando.

The bike featured many technological upgrades, but the model held true to the parallel twin version of the original Commando. He had some financial backing, and was going to begin larger-scale production. His finances, however, fell through and in 2006 Dreer had to suspend the dream of full-scale production of his own Norton Commando.Thats when Motocycles Garner, a UK-based businessman, stepped in. He formed Norton Motorcycles (UK), and motorcyclee the company got a few of the Dreer Commandos in the deal, his design team completely re-engineered the model.

In April 2010 limited production began of three Commandos the 961 SE (an edition of 200, already sold out), a Cafe Racer and a Sport model. The Norton features a tubular steel frame with integral oil tank and a fuel-injected 961cc parallel twin engine. Many of the component pieces are sourced from UK suppliers, but the Norton camada equipped with some of the best globally-available components including Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes.Several notable motorcycle magazines Home NEW 2016 Buyers Guide Motorcycles News Tests Long Termers Projects Recalls Features 20 Years of CMG The Insider The Making of Motorcycles Three4Three Specials Slant (editorial) Day Out Interviews Gear News Gear tests Books/Movies/Video Grandstand Racing News Moto GP CSBK Touring News Travel Features Discover Your Roads Forum Fundy Adventure Rally Of course, it may be a while yet before you can actually get your hands on a Norton in a dealership. After years of waiting, Norton has started delivery of their new Commando to the Canadian market.According to Nortons site, they celebrated the whole event not by attending a rally or something like that, but by having a black tie event at the British Consul Generals official residence in Toronto, with a bunch of Norton bigwigs and Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transportation, in attendance.Does that mean youll be able to march down to a local dealership and slap your money down, norton motorcycles launch canada a new bike?

The bikes dont seem to be in the country in that sort of volume yet, but Norton says theyve just moved into a new 45,000 square foot production facility in the UK thats intended to help them boost volume without hurting quality control. One of the key motivations for this move was to enable them to sell more bikes on the export market.Norton fans have been waiting a long time for these machines to appear. Arguably, this project started way back when Kenny Dreer bought the rights to the Norton name and started work on the 961 prototypes, and that was over ten years ago if you have a collection of old motorcycle mags around from that era, youll find it was a pretty popular project.

Around 2006, Dreer had to suspend production, and after that, UK businessman Stuart Garner bought the marque and started working on production in Donington Park, Leicestershire in the UK.Our last update was in February, when we received word the bikes had received Canadian homologation. At the time, we noted that even some British buyers were getting very disgruntled at the time it was taking Norton motorcyclex deliver their bikes. Hopefully, with the new production facility, that wait time will change. So They are .almost here ?Only awaiting a new manufacturing facility ?Not to worry about quality as volume ramps up ?A Black Tie Intro contrary to a reveal at a real biker event mmmSounds more like a party for the execs, to avoid the embarrassment of another missed release date.Too bad for Norton.

A decade has passed and their focus market has moved on to old age. Those kids who drooled over 71 Commandos are now in their 60s.Most nursing their aches and pains from previous bike adventures. So if these bikes ever actually make it to market, who is gonna buy them ?You coulda had a Bonny T100 when you still could ride Just sayin Norton missed the boat.Too little Too Late Theres more than a few guys in their 60s who could put the current generation in their 30s & 40s to shame when it comes to physical fitness.

Im in my mid 60s and just completed a 10000 km ride. Theres a guy I see at the gym whos almost 80 who recently bought a Concours14 and handles it just fine. Norton didnt miss any boat they know there market.

Plus one other minor point.my generation/age group generally has the loose change to go buy one. announced today that it has completed the purchase of historic Donington Hall, which will serve as its new corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities.Situated on 26 acres of classic English countryside and located within the Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit race complex, the new head office and production facilities are situated less than a mile from Nortons current manufacturing plant.

The company will first transition its corporate and engineering staff to the new location, and then subsequently prepare for transfer of its manufacturing to the site.Steeped in British history, the main building Donington Hall was constructed in a Gothic Revival style in 1790. While the original 40,000 ft2 Donington Hall and its grand entry greet with remarkable architectural style, the buildings interior features modern office and meeting facilities.

As recently as 2012, the site has served as world headquarters for British Midlands Airways, and benefits from a fresh, complete renovation and modernisation. Located within the same grounds to nortoj rear of Donington Hall is an additional 45,000 ft2 of a newly constructed building motorcyclles, known as Hastings Hall which will serve as Nortons production facilities. While our current location has served us well as our starting point for Norton, it does not reflect the identity and culture of the Norton brand well. stated Norton Boss Stuart Garner.

Donington Hall brings to mind a unique British style of permanence, strength and quality, attributes that we build into every Norton Motorcycle. He continued Style and design alone is not enough however, and beyond the drama of Donington Halls main building, the site includes a thoroughly modern facility that will allow us to expand production capabilities, as it is clear that canadq have quickly outgrown the capacity of our ormotorcycle News body type cafe racer choppers concept bike cruisers custom dirt bikes enduro offroad quad atv roadster scooters snowmobile sportsbikes streetfighter superbike supersports super motard tourers trail trikes Utility vehicles enthusiast topics custom motorcycles electric bikes sexy bikers spy shots renderin world record apparel auction celebrity norton motorcycles launch canada crash funny industry news innovation limited edition motorcycle motorcycle videos parts accesories racing ride safety scooter stunt tunersview all categories (174) motorcycle games photos The new Dominator from Norton captures the look and feel of the limited-edition Domiracer, but with a more production-friendly and street-legal layout.

Norton may have been a bit surprised at the pace at which the Domiracers got snapped up and at the high rate of conversion to street-legal status, but its response was right on target. Not only does the Dominator resurrect a venerable and storied name, but it shows that this once-mighty, British racebike factory that started out in the late 19th century is still relevant here in the beginning of the 21st.

You see, the company fell prey to the flood of cheap Japanese imports during the 60s and 70s, and even broke up and changed nofton a few times in subsequent years.Honestly, there was a time when I really felt the same as I did about motocrycles original Indian Motorcycle company; once it closed down and changed hands the first time, it wasnt the same ever again.

The octogenarian is as hardcore as they come when it comes to brandishing his love for all things two-wheeled and hes going to prove as much when he embarks on a 6,000-mile round trip from his home in Vancouver, Canada to North Carolina just so he can attend the 2015 International Norton Owners Association Rally.Mind you, Mootorcycles isnt planning on flying to the Tar Heel State.

Hes cnaada to do it riding his trusty 1971 Norton Commando 750 laaunch. As if that isnt emasculating enough for us all, Yarrows entire itinerary actually covers a period of 21 straight days, 16 of which will be spent on the road travelling from Vancouver to Lahnch Carolina and back to Vancouver again. This man is a titan in every sense of the word and yet, its par for the course for the man whose love for motorcycles has taken him to places most of us could ever dream of going to.

For starters, hes been on eight INOA events in his life, traveling to places as far as New York just to be a part of it. Oh, and according to Driving.ca, Yarrow participated in the Ironbutt Rally back in 2005, clocking in 11,000 miles in 11 days aboard his Yamaha FJR, doing all of that at the age of 73.Youre going to meet some tough riders in the world, but chances are, there arent a lot of them that can match wits with Gil Yarrow.Continue reading to read more about Gil Yarrows cross-country trip to join the 2015 INOA Rally. Not long ago, Norton has presented an interesting concept bike named the Domiracer.

It featured a tasty retro look an intriguing exhaust and the distinctive flair of a classic bike.Well, we have some good news for those who loved that concept, because Norton has recently announced that they will launch a production version of their Domiracer concept. Naturally, there will be some differences between the production version and the concept, but the company will struggle to keep these differences to a minimum level.Like the Domiracer concept, the cznada Norton Dominator SS is mostly aimed for track use, but we are hoping that it will also be street legal, so we can expect it to feature a fairly sporty pedigree. The new model will go by the name of Dominator SS and will be followed by a more serene version which will drop the sporty Candaa suffix.

We will have the occasion to see the new model live in January 2015 at the Donington Hall in UK.Stay tuned for more details. Meet the 201????WelcomeThank you for your interest in Norton Motorcycles.
